Date-Sweetened Shirley Temples with Natural Delights Medjool Dates (No Refined Sugar)

These Date-Sweetened Shirley Temples are a nostalgic favorite made with a better-for-you twist. Instead of artificial syrups, this version uses a homemade grenadine-style syrup naturally sweetened with Natural Delights Medjool dates and pomegranate juice for rich flavor and color. Free from refined sugar and dyes, they’re perfect for kids, celebrations, or an easy mocktail upgrade — with an optional cocktail variation for grown-up sipping.

Ingredients

  • Homemade Date “Grenadine” Syrup
  • 1/3 cup Natural Delights Medjool dates, pitted
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup 100% pomegranate juice
  • 1 tsp lemon juice

Preparation

Homemade Date “Grenadine” Syrup

Add dates + water to a small saucepan and simmer 10–12 minutes until soft.

Blend with pomegranate juice + lemon juice until smooth.

Strain through a fine mesh sieve for a smooth syrup and chill.

To make the Shirley Temples

Ice

1–2 tablespoons date syrup per glass

Lemon-lime soda or sparkling water

Bing or Maraschino cherries + lime or orange slices for garnish

Fill glasses with ice, add date syrup, and top with soda or sparkling water.

Garnish with cherries and citrus, and enjoy

Optional: add a splash of vodka for a fun date-night version

*While Medjool dates are high in natural sugars, they are low on the glycemic index thanks to a balanced amount of soluble fiber. The complex carbohydrates found in Medjool dates are digested at a slower rate, making them a source of dietary fiber and releasing energy to the body over a longer period of time.
