Date Halva

Date Halva with Tahini & Medjool Dates

This Date Halva is a creamy, nutty twist on a classic dessert, naturally sweetened with rich, caramel-like Medjool dates. Blended dates are combined with toasted flour, butter, tahini, and warm spices like cinnamon and cardamom to create a smooth, deeply flavorful halva that sets into perfectly sliceable squares. Finished with sesame seeds and optional pistachios or coconut, this easy treat is a comforting dessert that feels both traditional and indulgent.

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 6 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup tahini
  • ½ tsp cinnamon

  1. Place the dates in a bowl and pour the hot milk over them. Let them soak for 5 minutes, then blend until smooth.
  2. In a pan over medium heat, cook the flour for about 20 minutes, stirring frequently, until fragrant and lightly toasted.
  3. Add the butter and tahini and mix well until fully incorporated.
  4. Add the blended date mixture, cinnamon, cardamom and sesame seeds, mixing continuously until everything comes together into a thick halva.
  5. Turn off the heat and transfer to a dish. Spread and smooth the top then refrigerate for about 4 hours or until the halva is completely set. Slice and top with ground pistachio and desiccated coconut if desired.

*While Medjool dates are high in natural sugars, they are low on the glycemic index thanks to a balanced amount of soluble fiber. The complex carbohydrates found in Medjool dates are digested at a slower rate, making them a source of dietary fiber and releasing energy to the body over a longer period of time.
