A Sweeter Halloween Swap
A Sweeter Halloween Swap: Natural Delights Medjool Dates
This year, I’ve put extra emphasis on giving my Halloween spread a naturally sweet upgrade with Natural Delights Medjool Dates! As my kids have gotten older, they are less interested in actual candy (yay!) and more into delicious homemade sweet treats. The good news is, Natural Delights Medjool Dates can accomplish both! They are a fresh fruit that I’ve always called “nature’s candy” because they have a rich, caramel-like flavor and a soft, sticky texture that makes them so surprisingly versatile. But they offer so much more - fiber, potassium, magnesium, and protective plant compounds that can increase overall wellness. Sounds like a treat we all could use more of!
So, I’m ditching the candy bowl to make dates the star of the spread (as they should be). SO…bring on the Halloween challenge.
I challenged myself to make three recipes with dates as the feature: first, a date-inspired haunted treat, a sweet dip that everyone would enjoy, and finally a savory snack that would go great on a CharBOOterie board.
Want to join me? Let’s go!
A Haunted Treat: Spiderweb Date Bark
For the haunted treat, I went with a Spiderweb Date Bark…filled with fresh mashed raspberries, topped with melted dark chocolate, and then a little spiderweb made with stevia-sweetened melted white chocolate (super easy to accomplish…I’m not that crafty!).
This hit like a candy bar thanks to the caramel flavor and chewy texture of Medjool dates. Freezing it just took it over the top. And the raspberry just adds this pop of fruity deliciousness. The spiderweb was like a creative magnet that brought the kids in. This one was definitely a win! Easy, sweet, and satisfying.
A Sweet Dip: Espresso Date Caramel-1.png?width=1280&height=720&name=Blog%20Photo%20Template%20(3)-1.png)
For the sweet dip, I decided on a twist from the original date caramel. I tested soaking dates in espresso and…it was off the charts delicious! Blending them up with some vanilla and sea salt until velvety creamy. The espresso added a dark twist. It was the perfect complement to an apple-dipping bar with all the autumn feels. And secretly, the dietitian in me loves knowing that my kids are getting the added nutrition benefits.
Bottom line - the espresso soaking worked! Paired with lots of freshly sliced apples with all your family’s favorite toppings. This treat will keep them coming back for more.
A Savory Snack: Cheeseball Pumpkins
And for a savory-fun recipe, I made mini pumpkin cheeseballs - these were irresistible! Dates go hand in hand with crispy bacon, chopped green onions, and lots of sharp cheddar cheese. The sweet, chewy bite of Medjool dates, the crispy salty bacon, and flavorful cheese, all rolled in some natural gluten-free cheddar crackers and given a celery stem. It’s autumn on upgrade, and the star of the charBOOterie board, with lots of crackers, pretzels, and sliced veggies around.
These three recipe ideas received rave reviews in my house, and I hope they do in yours too! And the best part - we were energized and satisfied after these treats. No sugar-crashing involved.
I love these holidays that include memory-making with my rapidly growing kids. This one just got a little sweeter with us in the kitchen together, making treats that are better for us.
Have a happy (naturally sweet) Halloween!
